About Hydrostasis

Hydrostasis is an early-stage, venture-backed company headquartered in San Diego, CA. We are solving the problem of providing actionable and personalized hydration information, in order for people to take control of their own hydration health. The physiology of proper hydration is complex and requires insights from many different fields. We combine knowledge in biology, physiology, medicine, engineering, optics, physics, wearables, and machine learning to accomplish our goals. We seek the brightest and most diverse minds to grow and learn with, as we believe that diversity of thought is the key to our success. Our team is curious, respectful, and brings their whole self to work: pets and children are included in video calls. We believe that when our people feel whole at work (mind, body, and soul), we are happier, healthier, and perform at our best. We invite you to join us on our journey.

Job Summary

We are looking for a Firmware/Hardware engineer to join our team. This role requires a strong understanding of electrical design (schematics), PCBA design, and work experience with optical bio-sensors (similar to Apple Watch, Samsung watch, Fitbit, Amazfit/Huami). All of these devices utilize similar optical technology (green, red, infra-red LEDs and photodiodes), PPG/CCG, and pulse-oximetry. The Firmware design and implementation are the main focus of this role.

  • Work closely with the CTO and the engineering team (mobile applications and backend data platform)
  • Utilize modern, pragmatic, and effective development methodologies based on agile principles, gitops, and sensible versioning strategies for hardware and software backward compatibility.
  • Lead with thorough QA/QC initiatives, and set up documented processes for detailed HW/FW testing.
  • Create and maintain documentation. Familiarity with creating and maintaining FDA-required documentation is a plus.

  • BS/MSEE with 7+ firmware development experience for wearables clinical or wellness devices.
  • Working experience in developing for Bluetooth communication stack. Familiarity with other and upcoming communication technologies (e.g. 5G, LARA) is a plus.
  • Working experience with Nordic BT chipset (we currently use Ublox/Rigado)
  • Working experience with Analog Frontend chips (we utilize Maxim/ADI AFE)
  • Strong understanding of biosensors as a class of devices, and time-series as the type of data collection.
  • Experience with Power management.
  • Experience with accelerometers/gyros is a plus
  • Experience with secure micro MCU hubs (for loading encrypted algorithms) is a plus.
  • Strong expertise in embedded development in C/C++, and python scripting.
  • Experience in porting algorithms to MCUs is a huge plus.

Note* We emphasize “desirable” and “plus” in our list of qualifications. If you feel qualified and passionate about our mission, but don’t have all the bullet points, we still would like to talk with you. Don’t disqualify yourself.
